Gal Gadot’s Unfiltered Interview: Life, Love, and Wonder Woman 1984 Amidst Personal Struggles

This article, which was written prior to the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States, is being published at a time of significant changes to our daily lives. Gal Gadot, like many of us, has been impacted by the pandemic – her children’s school has closed, and her upcoming projects, including the release of Wonder Woman 1984 in June, have been put on hold (and later postponed until August 14). When reached in mid-March with her family, she remained positive despite the circumstances, stating that they were doing their best to make the most of their time together at home. While these times are surreal and unprecedented, she remained hopeful that we will overcome this challenge.

In an interview, she admitted that she always feels out of place in L.A., where she has been living because of her success as Wonder Woman. She misses the closeness of everything in her hometown, where everything is within a five-minute walk, and all neighbors are friends. Gadot admits that life in L.A. can be alienating, especially for someone as spontaneous as she is, as everything must be planned and strategized. Even a simple errand like buying milk can take an hour because of travel time.

One surreal experience Gadot had was bumping into Adele, whom she did not recognize at first. She stopped to chat with the singer, who was getting her cardio fix before her real workout. The encounter demonstrates that Gadot is not just any cool Israeli chick but an international superstar.

Although it may seem like Gadot became an overnight success after her role in Wonder Woman, she has been acting for more than a decade. She won the Miss Israel pageant in 2004, competed in Miss Universe and served two years in the Israel Defense Forces as a combat fitness instructor. She met her husband while still in the military and later enrolled in law school in Tel Aviv. She started modeling and eventually auditioned for several film roles, including the Bond-girl role in Quantum of Solace. Though she did not get that part, she landed a role in Fast & Furious because of her familiarity with military weapons.

Gadot’s rise to fame was unexpected. After catching the eye of a casting director while studying law and modeling in Israel, she landed a role in the Fast & Furious franchise. However, prior to becoming Wonder Woman, Gadot was considering quitting acting altogether due to the disappointment of repeatedly going through callbacks and not getting roles. Despite now being an actor living in L.A., she sees herself as more than just her job title and wants to continue evolving and taking on bigger and more interesting roles. While she considers herself ambitious, she also believes in karma and not fighting for things that aren’t meant to be hers. Gadot prioritizes her family and finds balance between her successful career and personal life. During a visit to her daughter’s school, Gadot read to her class and helped decorate cupcakes, showing that despite her stardom, she remains down-to-earth and relatable.
